Digital Images
|
Your can print
digital photos for about the same cost and quality as
printing film photographs. There are two
ways to print digital photos: print at home or use a
professional photofinishing service. Home printing is fast and convenient,
while professional photofinishing typically yields higher quality
prints for less. Here's what we're going to cover:

There are three
printing technologies available:
- Inkjet printers
- Thermal dye
printers
- colour laser
printers

Inkjet
Printers
Inkjet printers
apply ink to paper by squirting tiny droplets of ink onto the page.

|
Models vary
in speed, the number of ink colours they use (2-8), size, and the
maximum dots per inch (dpi) they can print. Higher dpi, larger page
size, more colour inks, and faster speed all mean better prints,
but also higher cost.
Inkjet
printers are also excellent document printers,
making them well suited for double-duty in a home office.
Consumers will
likely be most interested in the speed at which the printer can
produce prints.

Thermal
Dye Printers
Thermal dye
printers use heat-activated dyes sold in ribbons or rolls to colour
the paper.
|
Also called
"dye sublimation" or "dye sub"
printers, thermal dye printers produce
higher quality images that are more durable than inkjet
prints. But their cost per print is slightly higher.
Thermal dye
printers are faster than inkjet printers when printing full-colour
photos, but they are not well suited to
printing pages of text.
Thermal dye
printers usually print 4x6 inches or smaller. Larger models are
usually used only in commercial settings because they are so expensive.
Thermal
dye printers make the best photo prints.

Laser Printers
colour laser
printers melt powdered toner to the surface of the paper like a
photocopier does.

|
colour laser
printers are the preferred
technology for printing text documents.
However, they
are more limited in their image quality
and resolution than thermal dye printers or inkjet printers. Also
the printer itself is significantly more expensive. Laser printers
may not be able to use thicker papers, such as high-quality photo
paper.
A colour laser
printer is a great choice for informal
prints, where photo-like image quality is not essential.
They are also
good for making “test” prints before sending digital files out for
professional printing.
