Add colour: Printer Pigments and Inks

|
The pigment
the printer uses makes a huge impact on
the quality of the print. The inks used by inkjet printers
and thermal dye printers are more finely ground and pure than the
finest artists pigments.
But ink
is also an overlooked cost factor in printing. Over time
the cost of ink can cost more than the printer itself. Compare
ink refill prices too when shopping for a printer.
Laser printers
use similar toner powders as used by colour photocopiers. This limits
the quality of their images. For the best image quality use a thermal
dye printer or an inkjet printer.

People new to
inkjet printers may be shocked when they buy their first replacement
ink cartridges. These inks are finely ground pigment designed to
fit through the tiny pores of an ink jet nozzle without clogging.
Each printer
manufacturer designs their printers to work with a particular ink.
However, many people choose third-party refills to save money. Many
third party refills will work as well as the manufacturer’s ink,
but there is an increased risk of clogging or printing problems.
This can be annoying if the ink clogs while printing on expensive
photo paper.
When using third
party inks, be sure to only buy from an experienced specialist.

Paper: Cost and Quality

|
|

 |
The print is only as good as the paper
it is printed on. There are hundreds of paper products available
that will work with an at-home printer. But they fall into three
main categories for printing digital photos:
- Plain inkjet
paper
- Photo quality
inkjet paper
- Photo paper

INKJET
PAPER

|
This is the
thin, smooth paper we use for printing just about everything else
from resumes to lost dog fliers. But for printing digital photographs,
it has its drawbacks.
Inkjet paper is relatively porous making your dye spread and images
blurry or dark. It is too thin to absorb
much ink, so high-quality mode may soak the paper and
make it wrinkle and curl. However, it is extremely
cheap and is a good paper to make low-quality test
prints before printing on more expensive paper stock.

QUALITY PAPER

|
Photo quality papers
are usually thicker than plain paper.
They can absorb more ink without wrinkling. They also have a special
chemical coating that helps to dry the ink quickly without
bleeding. Photo quality paper will produce sharper, brighter images
than ordinary bond paper.

TRUE
PHOTO PAPER
 |
True photo
paper actually has a thin coating
resting on top of the paper that holds the ink. This coating keeps
the droplets of ink separate without bleeding so that the image
has the best possible clarity and brilliance.
The coating also provides a bright smooth surface that is more resistant
to damage from water, light, wrinkles and scratches. These papers
offer the best possible printing quality, but they can
be expensive. For any large volume of prints, it is more
economical to use commercial print services
